Teaching: Deuteronomy - The Law Is Good, If One Uses It Lawfully Part 1, Session 01 - Introduction D. Aaron Wells Winter Session 2024 January 7, 2024 Text: Deuteronomy 1-4 I. Introduction: The Law Is Good, If One Uses It Lawfully A. Why Study Deuteronomy? 1. Obstacles a. Deuteronomy 1:1-2...Ancient setting and obscure language b. 1 Timothy 1:3-7 "...vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law..." 2. Imperative: Scripture represents the Law as the baseline of faith a. John 3:12 "If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe..." b. Hebrews 12:25 "...For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth..." c. Luke 16:31 "If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets..." 3. Opportunity: To learn how to hear the words of Scripture properly, with understanding a. Matthew 13:52 "...out of his treasure what is new and what is old…" b. 1 Timothy 1:8-11 "...the law is good, if one uses it lawfully." B. How Should We Study Deuteronomy? 1. More than a repetition of the Law spoken beforehand, more than a history. 2. A collection of Moses' last sermons, spoken publicly at a particular time and place. 3. A series of deliberate discourses, not a collection of principles. C. Why is Deuteronomy Pertinent to Us as a Church? 1. Impressing upon us the importance of the written Word of God. 2. Encouraging us during the times in which we live. 3. Assuring us of the steadfastness of God's Purposes and the certainty of His Promises.
