The Plumb Line: Biblical Theology - Exodus, Exile & Eschatology Part 2, Session 11 - The Decalogue, Then & Now Chuck Hartman Fall Session 2025 November 13, 2025 Text: Exodus 19-20; Deuteronomy 4-5 Evangelical treatment of the Ten Commandments tends to divide along two interpretive lines. The first, and sadly all too common, denies any place for the Decalogue within the life of a Christian, except perhaps to place as a placard in the front yard, or to be seen handing in our public schools and courtrooms. “I am not under Law, but Grace,’ is the refrain that sees the commandments as part of an ancient works-salvation that was abolished by Jesus Christ and (especially) by the apostle Paul. The second approach, more common among Reformed theologians, is to vigorously attempt both to defend the honor and dignity of the Decalogue and to figure out just exactly how the commandments still (or ought to) apply to both the Church and the world today. The first view need not concern anyone studying Biblical Theology; if Torah has no place in the Christian Dispensation, then it has no place in Biblical Theology. But, of course, Biblical Theology presupposes that the Decalogue does have significance to the New Covenant community, if only via prophetic typology.
